In Ibid., I challenge image-making by manipulating appropriated images in a repetitive manner, creating disrupted images with abstraction and familiar motifs. The resulting series puts family snapshots in juxtaposition with hazy color blocks, giving equal weight to ambiguity and clarity. Ibid. is about photography’s burden—the expectation that it will accomplish something representational, or political. I experiment with the most common family snapshots and explore the potential significance people might give them. With no intentions of undermining the values or significance that people attach to images, I invite people to recognize their psychological desire to impose personal and public meanings on photographs.
